Strategic Thinking for HR Professionals
Hello to participants from the recent Carolinas Conference. I enjoyed the whole experience. Congratulations to the Planning Committee for another job well done. In addition to downloading the materials, you can look over the books to which I referred during my presentation at the bottom and right hand side of this page.
If you would like to download a copy of the workbook and slides I used during my presentation on Strategic Direction and Alignment, just click on the image of the cover page to the left.
I would also welcome your feedback about the presentation. Please send me an email here: markrho@mindspring.com
Carolinas Conference participants: Please click on the graphic to left to download a PPT with results of the survey of conference participants on the state of Strategic HR at their organizations.
If you are interested in reading more about this topic, I suggest two books, both of which are available in new or used condition from Amazon.
This book is by Henry Mintzberg, a venerable proponent of the school of Emergent Strategy. Mintzberg's work has greatly influenced my approach to strategy. In this work, Mintzberg and his co-authors provide an overview of ten "schools of strategy," including their own.
In my opinion, Bevin Alexander is the greatest living historian in the field of military strategy. His work rivals that of the legendary Liddell Hart, and is much more approachable for modern readers. Applications to be gleaned from the historical vignettes and stories that he tells simply jump off the page. You'll find a number of useful analogies for use in your own strategic decision-making.
